Hart Global Leaders Forum
Kelsey Annu-Essuman, Quetzabel Benavides and Rolando Velasquez joined other students from local high schools at Southern Methodist University to participate in this year's Hart Global Leaders Forum.
The students participated in morning sessions led by SMU professors Dr. Seyom Brown and Dr. Delores M. Etter. Brown discussed the Just War Doctrine in the context of recent US foreign policy. Etter spoke on the topic of emerging technologies being used in war and homeland surveillance.
The day culminated by the three JBS Law Magnet students joining additional students from JBS Law Magnet and other schools at McFarland Auditorium to hear former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates speak. He spoke passionately about not setting rigid goals in life and being open to opportunities. After Dr. Gates' speech Kelsey, Q and Rolando joined a smaller group to dine with Dr. Gates at the Umphrey Lee Center.
SMU hosts the Hart Global Leaders Forum each year. Past speakers have included General Colin Powell and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Y-O-D-A
In keeping with the tradition established a few years ago, I am proud to announce this year's theme - Y-O-D-A: The Year of Determined Achievement. We will achieve great things as a team. In the words of Dr. Scott "Duck" Deatheridge, "when one of us wins, we all win."
Yoda has a long connection with the Law Magnet debate team. My first year of coaching, my favorite phrase to share with the debaters was "do or do not, there is no try." I like this message and it holds true to this day.
That same year, the team took this small figurine to UIL State as a "good luck" charm. That team broke to the Sweet 16. Ms. Taylor, who is now the Assistant Debate Coach, was one of those debaters.
YEAR OF DETERMINED ACHIEVEMENT! This is your year to achieve because we are in it to win it!

JBS Law Joins DUDA in 2011-2012
Enjoying the team's most successful outing at TFA State was not the only major accomplishment at the tournament. After a series of email discussions over the last two weeks, Don Gonzalez, the JBS Law Magnet coach, and Nicole Serrano, Executive Director of the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance, met to discuss the Law Magnet's potential admission into the DUDA next year.
The two reached an agreement to have next year's JBS novice and sophomore CX debaters compete in the DUDA. The teams will abide by all the UDL rules regarding disclosure and evidence use. Serrano has agreed to include JBS in its workshops and training sessions. Additionally, the JBS Law Magnet has offered to host one of the DUDA debate tournaments at Townview. More exciting information about shared resources is pending and will be provided when finalized.
Gonzalez believes this will be the beginning of a mutually beneficial relationship which will facilitate a deeper and broader growth of debate in Dallas ISD.
Nicole Serrano, who is completing her first year as the Executive Director of the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance, brings a strong debate pedigree to the DUDA. Serrano has previously coached debate at Montgomery Bell and is a member of the Executive Board of the National Debate Coaches Association. She has also taught at the Dartmouth Debate Institute.

3 Top 20 Finishes @ TFA State
The JBS Law Magnet debate team had its most successful showing at TFA State with three Top 20 performances. Ivan Garcia and Rolando Velasquz finished in 17th place in CX Debate. Ivan Garcia (who has struggled with his speaker points all year) finished as the 19th Best Speaker in CX. Kelsey was the 20th Best Speaker in LD. Since TFA State is so large, they recognize the top 20 Speakers.
In a year, in which JBS was supposed to rebuilding, it got is first CX team to break at TFA state. Scott Deatherage used to say that "when won of us wins, we all win," that debate is more of a team effort than just the people debating in the room. That was obvious this weekend as Charlie Stephens and Zavier Wingham came up to help be part of the research/strategy team, instead of enjoying their first weekend of Spring Break. Below is a great picture of one of our "war room" sessions before leaving for the tournament.
Now we get ready for UIL Spring Meet and then the NDCA Championships in Scranton, PA.

If you still don't know the extent of your ability to debate next year, but want to go to a camp to make sure you save a spot on the team, I would recommend going to Cameron. I CANNOT OFFER ANY SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CAMERON. The price is affordable and it's only 6 days of your Summer Break.
Most of you would be intermediate or advanced.

Rolando Velasquez Finishes in Top 10
Rolando Velasquez finished as 10th Place Best Speaker this weekend. That is a great accomplishment at a TOC tournament. Most TOC tournaments recognized the Top 20 speakers in each event.
Katia Takes on Entire Grapevine NLD Squad
Katia Ramirez dominated the NLD field throughout the preliminary rounds, defeating four Grapevine debaters in route to a 5-0 record. Katia defeated another Grapevine debater in the Quarter Finals, setting up yet another debate against Grapevine. Having had five previous opportunities to hear her arguments, the Grapevine debater prevailed and Katia finished in 3rd Place. According to Mr. Gonzalez, he could not recall a single time in which a debater or team was required to debate one squad so many times and questioned the tab room's management of the tournament. On a bright note, Katia finished the season with three TFA points, the most ever accumulated by a freshman JBS LD debater.
The varsity debaters were in the hunt for a TOC bid. Ivan Garcia and Rolando Velasquez finished in 9th Place and missed the bid round by .5 speaker points. Rodolfo Velasquez and David Webb once again finished with a winning 3-2 record, but it was not enough to break.
The JBS Law Magnet Debate Team closed out the TFA regular debate season at the Colleyville TOC Winter Classic. Garcia-Velasquez and Kelsey Annu-Essuman will be competing at TFA state March 10-12.
